Foundation of Udaipur
Historically, Udaipur was the capital of the Kingdom of Mewar, which was ruled by the Sisodia dynasty for a period of 1200 years. The History of Udaipur in India, like a number of other cities in Rajasthan, is an illustrated one that dates back several centuries. ᠌![]() Founder of Udaipur Maharana udai singh mewar The capital of Mewar "Udaipur " was founded by Rana Udai Singh after the Akbar annexed Chittor in 1568. The Rajputs were thrown out of their capital but they never gave up their sense of freedom, and chose to give up their lives for dignity and honour . According to the legend, one day "Maharana Udai Singh" was hunting when all of a sudden, he came across a sage who was meditating on a hill over looking Lake Pichola. Seeking his blessings, the Maharana was advised by the solitary man to build a palace at that place and then the fortunes of his family would change. According to the sage, the place was perfectly suited for such an establishment since it was a fertile valley, well watered by the lake and also experienced a soothing climate as it was situated at a moderate altitude. Thus following the proposal of the hermit, Maharana Udai Singh founded the city of Udaipur in The Maharana built a small shrine, Dhuni Mata, to mark the spot which is now the oldest part of the City Palace.Udai Singh further chose Udaipur as his new capital and also built an artificial lake "Udai Sagar ". Later he also hit upon a pond which is said to have been built during the 15th century by a banjara (gypsy).Such is the origin of Udaipur History.
