Sahelion-ki-Bari

This lovely park, the ‘Garden of the Maidens’, appears discreet and in impeccable taste.  There are four pools with dainty kiosks, and all around are flowerbeds, lawns, pools, and fountains protected by a series of walls and shady trees.  The fountains of the Sahelion-ki-Bari function solely by water pressure and nowhere are pumps used.

[This lovely park, the 'Garden of the Maidens' is one of Udaipur's main attractions.  Enclosed by high walls, separating the park from woodland, Sahelion-ki-Bari appears discreet almost like the 'Secret Garden'.  These walls served not only to protect the gardens, but even more so, to protect those within; for these gardens were designed as a haven for the noble and royal ladies of Udaipur.  Sahelion-ki-Bari was laid out with great artistry, incorporating several diverse features so that each section provides a new experience.  The main approach, on passing through a great gate, is down a long decorative marble path, bordered on either side by a row of water jets, which leads to the pavilion that dominates the centre of Sahelion-ki-Bari.  To the sides of the main approach, the park is arranged in a semi-formal way, with emerald lawns, vibrant flower borders, and scented shrubs.  Left of the pavilion, the park takes on a change of mood.  Here the tall, ancient trees gives one the feeling of an enchanted forest; a sensation heightened by its focal point, a wide, circular stone-flagged glade, in the centre of which is a fountain encircled by water jets.  The outer edge of the glade is ringed by yet another row of jets and the whole is almost totally surrounded by luscious palms, creepers, and trees.  Few rays penetrate the woodland canopy and the glade is always cool and peaceful, with the sound of birdsong and the splash of the fountains to refresh the most jaded mind.  The combined effect of sunlight, shade, water, and greenery is enchanting and the sound of birdsong and the splash of the fountains will refresh the most jaded mind.  The effect of dappled sunlight, water, and verdure is ethereal.

To the rear of Sahelion-ki-Bari is a large, circular lily pond, which is dominated by an ornamental fountain, and overlooked by four magnificent marble elephants set at each quarter.  The remaining side of Sahelion-ki-Bari is again, semi-formal.  Every water feature was designed to function by water pressure from the nearby Fateh Sagar Lake.  This ingenious system still works, and nowhere are pumps used.

The central pavilion of the gardens is entered via a traditional archway.  The courtyard within is situated around a square water tank.  In the middle stands a large, elegant chatri.  On each of the corners of the tank is another smaller chatri of finely carved black stone.  The high walls of the courtyard are overhung with swathes of multicoloured Bougainvillaea.
